The Danforth
The Danforth is an area of Toronto located east of the Don Valley known for its rich offerings of restaurants, entertainment, and great shopping.
Greek Appeal
The Danforth is also known as GreekTown, since North America’s largest concentrated population of Greeks lives there. Many restaurants and bakeries feature Greek cuisine and a large number of the stores have a Greek proprietor or theme. Although it is known as GreekTown, the area also boasts restaurants and stores from a variety of cultures.
Healthy Living
The Danforth is also known for its health consciousness and holistic healing. Natural food stores serve those health conscious grocery shoppers. Yoga studios, fitness centres, holistic healing, naturopaths, and other alternative lifestyle options are located on the Danforth.
The History of the Area
Danforth Village began as a small community, literally cut off from the City of Toronto by the Don Valley. The area began to take off commercially once improvements in transportation by the City made travel and trade much easier.
The biggest change came when, in 1919, the City of Toronto built the Prince Edward Viaduct, a bridge over the Don River. The Viaduct connected the Danforth with the City, which initiated a movement of people and businesses to the Danforth.
